A game of faith & focus

By: Manpreet Singh, Global ICT Expert & a devoted Sikh

At the beginning of the year 2020, no one would have imagined that we will be locked into our homes, schools/colleges closed and everyone being compelled to stay indoors. No one would have imagined that even the religious places could be closed because of an invisible enemy aka Coronavirus. But, it is true. As Sri Guru Granth Sahib says, hukamai a(n)dhar sabh ko baahar hukam na koi, everything that is happening is as per God’s will.

It’s been a tough time for almost everyone. Many people have lost their jobs, many people have their businesses shut down and many of us are finding it difficult to manage work and home simultaneously. The stress levels have increased, there is huge insecurity with respect to jobs, growth and health. It seems that the situation is beyond our control. We can’t do much about it but only expect it to improve in the coming days.

Now, the question is, what can we do here? Shall we accept it as our defeat against Corona virus? Let’s try to find an answer to these questions & doubts from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

SGGS on Ang 70 says, when you are confronted with terrible hardships, and no one offers you any support, when your friends turn into enemies, and even your relatives have deserted you, and when all support has given way, and all hope has been lost, if you then come to remember the Supreme Lord God, even the hot wind shall not touch you.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji says dheh sivaa bar moh ihai subh karaman te kabahoo(n) na Taro|| n ddaro ar so jab jai laro nisachai kar apunee jeet karo || which means O God, grant me wisdom that I may not hesitate from performing good actions. I may not fear the enemy, when I go to fight and assuredly I may become victorious.

The above snippets from Gurbani are sufficient to conclude that we should not give up. It’s time to be courageous and stay positive. It’s time to come out of the comfort zones and challenge ourselves. It’s time to improvise, learn new things, gain knowledge and uplift ourselves to the extent we are in demand in the market. Also, at the same time, it’s time to start our spiritual journey which brings us closer to the Almighty. It’s time to be thankful to God for everything that thy has given to us. It’s time to be compassionate towards society and Nature.

It’s time to put an end to the vices and demons inside us : Lust, Anger, Ego, Greed and Wordly desires. It’s time to be victorious over our consciousness (our Mann) and seek the sanctuary of the Almighty.

Well, these things don’t guarantee us a job, but, these things will definitely help to become a better human being. Let’s make a sincere attempt to do our best and leave rest to the Almighty. SGGS says nanak chi(n)taa mat karahu chi(n)taa tis hee hei|| jal meh ja(n)t upaian tinaa bh rojee dhei || which means, don’t be scared my friend. The God will take care of you. God even gives nourishment to creatures who live in the water.

Let’s hope for the best! There is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Chardikala!

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

(With blessings of Dhan Guru Nanak)
